PreK January Newsletter
Mrs. Vaughan and Miss Emily
January is going to be an exciting month in Pre-K! This month our dramatic play area will be transformed into an ice cream parlor and at the end of the month it will change to a post office. Our writing center will become a winter writing station where snow and snowmen will be our theme. The kids will use rhyme matching cards, snowball sight word matching games, mitten rhyming games, penguin sound matching games and they will trace snowman letters. They will also be able to trace letters and words in our snow writing trays. (salt and blue glitter) We will have snowflake letter match up games and write our “winter words” throughout the month. Our sensory bin will be filled with artificial snow early in the month, sensory balls and noodles and colored water, soapy water and water with ice cubes near the end of the month. We will also be making snowmen with play-dough. In our math center, we will be measuring with snowball rulers and cotton balls and we will practice counting with snowflakes and our “build a snowman game.” The kids will also work on counting and sorting with “snowman stew” and by making winter number lines with erasers. We will continue with patterning by playing winter themed pattern games.
This month we will be covering the letters Mm, Nn, Oo, and Pp and will learn numbers 13-16. The children will be painting with marbles, newspapers, potatoes and pennies as well as making noodle collages, mitten wreaths and owls. During “Oo” week, we will have an “ocean” theme. We will make jelly fish, crabs, fish, sharks and scuba divers. All of our centers will be focusing that week on the ocean which will include a fish bump counting game, pirate flag counting, ocean animal spin and graphing game, rhyming clam match, ocean clapping/ building syllables activity and ocean animal ABC order activity. On Wednesday, January 31st, we will have a letter P picnic where our snack will be foods that start with the letter “P”. I will have a sign up for those of you that would be willing to bring in a few snacks for us to have.
Throughout the month, individual assessments will be taking place in preparation for conferences during the week of January 22nd. Times will be offered before school and after school throughout the week with most being on Friday. A sign-up genius email will be sent for conference times available.
Please remember to dress your child appropriately (we will go outside weather permitting). January is full of cold and “blustery days.”
Throughout the month, please look for our volunteer sign ups outside of our classroom? We have a new classroom volunteer list/calendar that covers January through the end of the year.
Play-dough for January: Lincoln Taylor’s family and Nolan Lorek’s family (Please make white play- dough. This is a change from purple that was originally on the sheet)
